WordPress 3.0 hot out of the tubes

Today they launched the new version of WordPress. Version 3.0, also known as Thelonious, promises to be a great step forward, though most WordPress users and certainly visitors to websites running WordPress won’t even notice the difference since many of the changes affect things behind the scenes.

I’m looking forward to playing around with it. I didn’t try out pre-release versions because I didn’t want to “break” things, but as soon as it was announced I flipped this very site from 2.9.3 to 3.0 and selected the new default theme called Twenty Ten, which I immediately customized. Over the next couple of weeks I’m going to hack up the theme for a new look for my website, so stay tuned.

One thing I’ll definitely be looking for is whether or not the new version, and the new theme, have any added functionality for accessibility. I have to say, out of the box Twenty Ten is a good starting point – nice semantic coding, the colors are high contrast, and the layout is pretty usable. In fact, other than the header graphic and colors, it’s not very different from my previous site iterations, so I think a look under the hood offers real promise.
